I don't get this! Why didn't I feel a thing??? Please help!!?

Ok I had an epedual in my shoulder. Well a catheter was put in my shoulder. Well I was given local anistetic. But I was totally awake when it was happening and I was talking to the nurses and stuff. I could remember everything that happened! But I couldnt feel a thing the doctor did! I could here him talking but didn't feel a thing! Why is that?
