Is a urinary catheterization a medical procedure that should be done by nurses and other med professionals?
I have worked as a direct support staff for years and nurses at my agency have always completed a urinary catheter daily on one of our individuals who lives at home and only receives day services. Now there are 2 new nurses, the head nurse insisting they should not have to do this procedure, as it is not a medical procedure. She has typed up a training and we are being forced to do this procedure, even though we do not feel qualified. This is not a nursing home, no one is a CNA. It is a nonprofit behavioral facility. It is not in our job description, but the director of agency is saying we must do this. Curious to hear people's thoughts, especially trained nurses or others in medical field.
